So I thought I was going to get three Bs and a C
But then I was like “fuck that” and got three As and a B instead. So, does putting forth the minimal amount of effort and still passing make me brilliant, or an idiot?
That was rhetorical.
I’d like to thank my newest confidant, Cassie Dillard. We went to hell and back, relatively unscathed. Love your face!
Drinks all around!
Finally, things are getting better. I have to say, April has not been my month. I got arrested, I was fined $400 for having an unauthorized pet, I’ve been alone (because I had to get rid of said pet - pathetic, I know) and on top of school, dealing with the past, and nothing to look forward to, I feel like I haven’t been able to catch a break in a really long time.
But, you know, things always get better. I’m an idiot for not remembering that. After all, life sucks and then you die. Seriously, just laugh and let go. My father is employed again, I’ve become really good friends with one of my roommates (she’s terrific, and just what I needed - check out her blog), and that ridiculous fine was reduced to $150. I’m the happiest I’ve been in awhile.
On that note, I’d like to thank all of my lovely followers for all of the encouraging messages I’ve received over the past week. I’m glad you really like Facts of the Caribbean and I’m happy to continue posting interesting facts so long as I can find them! Help out, if you’d like.
Did you know that “hang the code” is a double entendre, playing on the fact that I’m a computer science major? You know, coding languages like Java and such.

For the final time…
I’ve added it to the FAQ. My sources are IMdB, the POTC Wiki, and my own general knowledge. Honestly, I’d cite a source for each fact but some of them aren’t stated anywhere, but are in deleted scenes or commentary. The first two are credible sources, but if you have a problem with the last one, I give you this:

It’s the honest ones you want to watch out for, anyway.

To those of you wondering
The facts I’ve posted so far I’ve known about for some time. I got them from the POTC Wiki and from various other sources including IMdB.
Just letting everyone know, I really like “Facts of the Caribbean”. It’s fun for me right now. I encourage you all to submit facts you’d like to see posted (do so here). Make sure you have a source!
Here are a few Pirate-related facts about me:
- When I created this blog, I wanted “keeptothecode” as my username but it was taken.
- My wifi name is “Isla Cruces”, the island where Davy Jones buried his heart
- I ship Jarck
Take what you can!

So I got arrested last Friday night.
Why? Well here’s what happened: I went to visit a friend and we had quite a bit of tequila. She and her sister were taking so many shots, I just couldn’t keep up. I was feeling a bit sick so I went out for a walk. I called my friend Jacky; when I feel sick, it’s important for me to focus on something. So I was out on the lawn by the mailbox giving Jacky advice when a cop pulled up. I didn’t want to immediately walk away, that’s just too suspicious. So I stood there talking on the phone. He approached me and asked me about my situation. I didn’t lie, I’m actually a terrible liar. He told me to hang up and then arrested me on the spot. He didn’t even recite the Miranda rights (“You have the right to remain silent,” etc.) Seriously, what a prick. I’d never been arrested before. He charged me with public intoxication and took me to jail.
Thomas is dead. It’s Tom, now. Sweeney Tom. Talk about a trumped up charge! Anyway, as I was sitting in the main holding cell, I noticed “Tortuga” scratched into the wall. I’m not sure why, I suppose it was some sort of gang thing, but I found it pretty funny, actually. What a night.
I’m not a criminal. I did not deserve what happened to me. I wasn’t being obnoxious, nor was I being loud, suspicious or belligerent. And now I have to go talk with a judge to get all of this sorted out. Wish me luck.
I’LL COME AGAIN WHEN YOU HAVE JUDGE ON THE MENU.
P.S. I haven’t forgotten about “Epiphany”. I’ll make the video when I’m alone and have time.

OH MY GOD
To those of you who have kept up with my life, you know that I really hate Film Sound, a course I have to take as part of my degree plan.
Let me break this down for you. SO MANY THINGS. As mentioned in a previous post, I have to write about The Dark Knight’s score by Hans Zimmer. The thing about this assignment is that it’s composed of many sub-assignments, ergo, A LOT of work. It’s gotten to the point where I feel as if the only reason I have so much work for this pathetically useless class is so my professor can feel just a tad important. Overcompensation.
ANYWAY, as a sub-assignment, I was made to find scholarly (I had to use Google Scholar when searching) sources that might help me write my final paper. I found one that talks about Hans Zimmer’s work on various films so I thought, cool, this will work.
So it turns out that it’s 80 pages, which I’m totally not going to read, but I found this:
The Main Title theme can be compared to the overture of an opera. Buhler, Neumeyer and Deemer, in their book, Hearing the Movies: Music and Sound in Film History (2010) put forward the idea…
AND GUESS WHAT?

Note the expression. Guess who James Buhler is? (By the way, yes. My professor has us reading out of his own book. How lame is that?)
So yes, they all know each other. All of the sound theorists. Just lovely. But that fact isn’t half as aggravating as this, another thing that I found in the paper:
The film also has smaller themes, such as the “Love theme”. This is a slow-moving piece of music which we hear when two of the characters, William Turner, played by Orlando Bloom and Elizabeth Swann, played by Kiera Knightly are about to meet or when they are faced with the issues relating to their love affair. The piece is melancholic and suggests despair, as the two will never be together in the conventional sense. Turner is forever doomed to be the captain of Davy Jones’s ship, The Flying Dutchman, spending seven years at sea and only one day on land every seven years.
Really? SEVEN YEARS?
…
I can’t even. Scholarly source my ass.
So I really hate Intro to Film Sound…
I have to take an undergraduate studies course as part of my degree plan. I was able to choose the topic but I really didn’t think the class would be this demanding. I mean, c’mon… it’s film sound. My TA has been riding me all semester, he takes his job way too seriously. He’s a doctoral candidate for sound theory. I mean, honestly… sound theory? Yeah, we’ve got a badass over here.
So, ugh. I have to write yet another paper on a film. Thankfully, this time I got to choose from a list, so I chose The Dark Knight. I really do like the soundtrack (by Hans Zimmer, of course) but listening to it just makes me want to listen to the Pirates of the Caribbean soundtracks. It’s just sad, but that’s what I love about Hans Zimmer’s music. It all sort of sounds the same, in a good way. I just hate that I can’t work on this stupid assignment and listen to music at the same time because I actually have to pay attention to the stupid soundtrack to write.
BUT JUST IMAGINE if I were able to write about Pirates of the Caribbean? I think that’s probably the only way I would ever enjoy this class. I could totally nerd out, and I’m pretty sure my TA would be impressed. I don’t want to write about Darth Vader’s leitmotif, I’d rather write about the sync points in sword fights and Jack Sparrow’s theme.
But no, I can’t. Woe is me.
Friends don’t let friends make GIFs while drunk.
Oh, wait… I don’t have any friends.

Hey everyone! My blog can now be reached at hangthecode.tk

Also, you may have noticed a few odd changes to the site. Let’s just say I’m a struggling college student and, at least this way, I won’t feel so bad about being on Tumblr when I should be doing other things. Cheers! More graphics to come!
Sidenote: To everyone who has complimented either me or my blog, thank you so very much! I can’t respond to everyone but those comments really do brighten my day.
Much love,
